How our farm story began...
It all started with a picture book, The Tin Forest, by Helen Ward and Wayne Anderson. In this beautiful tale, a forsaken wasteland is, over time, sewn with the seeds that rejuvenate both the land and the creatures that come to it. With the spirit of this book, we decided to take on our own project of revival.
In 2010 we purchased the beautiful land that would become our Tin Forest. Of course, when we bought, the beauty of the place was mostly in its potential: of the 142 acres, 1/2 were (and still are) wetlands. Another 1/4 of the parcel was a dilapidated junkyard, leaving us the last 1/4 section of land to get our home and farm started. In the years since, we have forged our home and our farm even as we stripped away old tractors, scrap metal, discarded kitchens, carpets, mattresses, and all other types of junk. With each layer we uncovered, we found not only interesting things, but continued to build a deeper relationship with the land and have fallen madly in love with all the beauty it continues to show us. Because of this process, at Tin Forest Farm we don't really see ourselves as farmers. Instead we see ourselves as caretakers of this beautiful planet we inhabit, with our roots firmly planted in our 142 acres of it. This connection means our priority is ensuring that what happens on this land is good for the environment, the animals and the people.
